One of the most evident features of EA is the fact that it is surrounded by a semantics jungle. Even the emerging EA frameworks are still illicitly using and misusing terms and concepts borrowed from research design, which in turn imported these from philosophy, such as ontology, epistemology, methods and methodologies, etc. Before we had research design, we use to call it simply logical reasoning. It is quite clear therefore that to gain an identity, the providers of EA frameworks felt that they had to artificially invent a completely new vocabulary. These new vocabularies are erroneously presented as ontologies, but in fact are just taxonomies. Zachman International insists that the Zachman Framework is first and foremost an ontology, and not a methodology. Forrester even provides a toolkit just to understand the nomenclature so haphazardly used in both the description and promotion of these architectural frameworks. The high degree of semantic complexity coupled with the haphazard use of terminology has in fact sealed the fate of EA before it actually emerged. It is a myth that Einstein’s theory of relativity was only first understood by three people; had that been the case it would have failed outright.
